Ken, what is your job at the firm where you work?
I am the Network Administrator at Clark Newhall.

What size is the size of the practice and how many employees does your firm have?
Two attorneys and three staff members.

What technical setup do you have at your office (number of machines, etc)?
We have seven client Macintosh computers and one Xserve for file hosting, FileMaker Server, and Clarity Legal DepoSmart Server.

What suggestions do you have for people using technology in their practice?
Take time to understand the technology and train staff members to use it. Technology is incredibly effective when every member of your team understands and uses the technology correctly.

What bag of tricks or software do you use the most in your practice? Is there a special feature in any of the packages that you like the most?
We use many solutions to organize our data, but we love being able to import transcripts, link exhibits, and having them available on the server for everyone to use.

What advantages do you have over your competition as a result of the way you employ technology in your practice?
Our ability to share and organize transcripts saves our staff and attorneys time. Without having to search through physical files or browse our server, we can pull up cases in Deposmart and have quick access to searchable transcripts with linked exhibits.

What trends do you see in legal technology?
The trend I’ve noticed the most working for large firms and small firms is the need for multi-platform support and compatibility. As technology evolves, more people are looking to alternatives like Apple and Linux. Macs in particular have excellent reputations on our ability and security internally at our firm, perhaps the two largest issues for lawyers.

What technical challenges to do you face in your practice?
Our biggest technical hurdle has been finding multi-platform software that works great on both Macintosh and Windows PCs. Clarity Legal has helped in providing multi-platform support to organize and make deposition transcripts readily available and searchable.

What Clarity Legal Software products do you use?
DepoSmart and Deposmart SQL Server.

What Clarity Legal Software product feature do you like best?
The feature on Deposmart we like best is the ability to link exhibits to the relevant portion of the deposition transcript. It allows for quick referencing, and since our attorneys won’t have to hunt for the referenced exhibits, our attorneys are faced with less interruptions and distractions.
