Kern, what kind of practice do you have?
Our practice is focused on trying cases (primarily for plaintiffs) in both State and Federal courts. In the past year or so we have handled cases involving employment law (harrasment, discrimination, whistleblower, ADA); medical malpractice; criminal cases (DWI, murder). Fair Labor Practices (Doffing/Donning PPE), Personal Injury (Trucking Accidents) and Commercial law (Fraud and DTPA).

What size is your practice and how many employees do you have?
We are a four lawyer firm (3 Partners + 1 Associate) plus 3 legal assistants/support.

What technical setup do you have at your office (number of machines, etc)?
All attorneys have MacBooks, staff has 24” iMac’s.

What suggestions do you have for people using technology in their practice?
Spend the money for the best equipment and take the time to learn the products at the beginning.

What bag of tricks or software do you use the most in your practice?
We are a Mac based firm, we use MS Word, Daylite, DepoSmart & TrialSmart, Circus Ponies NoteBook and Adobe Acrobat.

What advantages do you have over your competition as a result of the way you employ technology in your practice?
Technology used correctly makes you look organized and confident. The jury can tell you know your case in and out when you are not fumbling for papers.

What trends do you see in legal technology?
Small firms can look just as polished as the big ones with techology. Thus small firms are catching on to the need to stay up on technology. The last thing you want is to be behind in both technology AND manpower.

What technical challenges to do you face in your practice?
Getting busy attorneys to invest the time to learn the products at the outset rather than the week before trial when they wonder if the software can perform a certain task. The other technology challenge is getting court reporters to provide better support for Mac’s and with Clarity Legal Software's Bundler™, we now have support where we never had it before.

We love the exhibit presenter in TrialSmart™. Callouts and annotations on exhibits make us look like CBS’s 60 minutes at trial!
